Bob Phillips: Surf Art

by Corinne Connover | 2009

An interview with California-native artist and surfer, Bob Phillips (pictured right).

CC: Do you see your passion for surfing as an art form or more of a sport?
BP: My passion is surfing and painting. One drives the other.

CC: Looking at your work gets us ready for summer. Your latest painting at the Point reminds me of weekends down in Surfside and Turtle Bay. What places inspired you to create "Surf Art?"
BP: Wife and I have lived near the beach all of our lives. My inspiration comes from the local area in Huntington Beach, California.

CC: What are some of the surfers who have influenced you and your work?
BP: Influenced by Jerry Yarnell, a fine artist and instructor. He's not a surfer, however.

CC: Former ball player, huh? Who did you play for?
BP: Played in high school, also college and semi-pro. However, injuries suffered in the Korean War put an end to my career.

CC: Top spots you love to surf?
BP: Bolsa Chica State Beach and Huntington Beach Pier.

CC: Any advice for the groms and grommets starting out.
BP: Just enjoy the ride.

CC: When you started surfing, was it about the time you began painting?
BP: Initially, I started surfing in 1949. Did a lot of drawing as a child. However, wasn't able to spend much time drawing or painting until I retired in '94.

CC: Ever venture out hurricane season?
BP: No.

CC: Your paintings of "21" and "23" surfboards are an approach that to me was unique. What sparked you to create the paintings?
BP: Bolsa Chica Beach used to have a low wall that all the regulars leaned their boards on. It made for good paintings.

CC: We always like to ask contributors what motto or saying they tend to live by. Have any you'd like to let us in on?
BP: Enjoy everyday your alive.

Bob Phillips has been able to devote more time on art, the surfing scene, and spends time enjoying his family (52 years to Joyce, three children, five grandchildren and one great grand-son!) or just hanging out. You see and purchase his artwork at leftyphillips.com.
