French Spectral Romance

by Farrah Sarafa | 2009

Seine-lit and wearing evening's black, he sits on the step behind
          drawing pictures with his eyes
                on my back.

Tempted to turn, to burn, to disperse my silence, my stubbornness,
and to make something good from this day's
                      violent ways,
          I choose to stay.

He stands, his shadow cast an ancient Gaul on the wall near,
ready—I anticipate, I fear he may come here,
         but
              he suddenly walks
                   away.
