Morning on Kauai's
North Shore

Liquid light
appears just past five,
An hour I would groan to see back home

Like honey,
it drips slowly through the blinds
into the bedroom

Cool pillows
and gently twisted sheets
feel it first

And soon enough
it warms my face and eases
my eyes open to the day.

And what a day
it is, ambling into sunlight
each window like a watercolor

Pine Trees
tall and straight like sail boat masts
line the yard

Palms
heavy with green coconuts
just out of reach

A gazebo
incongruous
floats in a green sea

And then below
the sea itself,
already wide awake

Waves break gently-
the foam a wispy white
like cirrus clouds

And I lie there...
drinking morning like coffee
and thankful such a place is real.
